“Hidden Pacific” Features Pacific Ocean Gems Under Threat

Hidden Pacific, a new feature film in IMAX, opening this year in theaters around the world, features spectacular footage of three Marine National Monuments found in the vast Pacific Ocean. Immerse yourself in the rare riches of biological diversity captured magnificently by award-winning conservation photographer and filmmaker Ian Shive.

Two of these Monuments, Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument and Rose Atoll Marine National Monument, are threatened by the Trump Administration, which has proposed either shrinking the size of these protected areas and/or introducing commercial fishing within their boundaries.

Many of these Monuments were established by former Presidents under the provisions of the Antiquities Act. The intent was to safeguard a number of small islands and healthy coral reefs with large enough buffer zones around them to shield whales, dolphins, sharks and coral reefs from harm.

In addition to the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument and Rose Atoll Marine National Monument, the film also features Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

“These outlying atolls are part of our world that has rarely, if ever, been captured,” said Ian Shive, the film's producer and director, and founder of Tandem Stills + Motion. “Each day of filming in these places was an exceptional experience. It was not uncommon for someone on our team to be emotionally overwhelmed by the magnificent beauty of it all. As filmmakers, we are pleased to be able to share these places with others and provide an educational component that examines our natural history as well as our military history.”

Ian has shared his photography and film clips with Earth Island Institute at our home in the Brower Center. Hidden Pacific is produced by Tandem Stills + Motion and distributed by Giant Screen Films.

These small islands and huge ocean reaches are rarely visited, much less photographed, so much of the film is unique, providing viewers with a virtual vacation in the tropical Pacific. Don’t miss it!

The International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP) of Earth Island Institute is responding to the Trump Administration's threats to these Monuments. We are working with the Stanford University Environmental Law Clinic and University of California Irvine Environmental Law Clinic to challenge proposals by the Administration that would compromise the Marine National Monuments, with special emphasis on the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. We are keeping a sharp eye on actions by the Administration that would harm the Monuments and the marine life they protect.
