The International Marine Mammal Project has been around for over three decades. During that time, we’ve seen many volunteers come and go – college students pitching in when they can; local community members coming in after work; whoever they are and wherever they come from, volunteers are integral to the work that we do.
But just recently, the International Marine Mammal Project, along with the David Brower Center, named July 13th Betty Phillips Day – in honor of our longest standing volunteer ever in the history of our organization.
Elizabeth Phillips, mother of David Phillips, Director of the International Marine Mammal Project, has been coming into the office once a week for the last 13 years! What began as a short-term arrangement evolved into an ongoing role that has proven to be invaluable.
In her honor, we threw her a luncheon, attended by much of Earth Island Institute and David Brower Center staff.
Very special thanks goes to Mary Jo Rice, who put together a beautiful and delicious lunch; to everyone who attended to honor IMMP’s best and longest-running volunteer, and to Betty herself for her invaluable contributions.
