Sign the Petition to President Biden to Tackle Plastic

Topics: Biden Administration, Plastic Pollution

The International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP) of Earth Island Institute is hitting the ground running with President Biden taking the reins of the United States.

IMMP has joined forces with many major environmental organizations in seeking early action by President Biden on an array of issues to protect whales, dolphins, and their ocean homes.

One major initiative, supported by IMMP and more than 600 groups, is the Presidential Plastics Action Plan https://www.plasticfreepresident.org , urging a number of specific policies and legislative actions to address the plastics plague facing the world’s oceans.

There are eight specific actions that President Biden can take:

1. Use the purchasing power of the federal government to stop purchases of single-use plastic items and replace them with reusable products.
2. Suspend permits for new plastic production plants in the US and exports from the US.
3. Make corporate polluters pay and reject false solutions.
4. Advance environmental justice in petrochemical corridors.
5. Update laws to prevent pollution from plastic facilities using best available technology.
6. Stop subsidizing plastic producers.
7. Join international efforts to reduce plastic pollution using new and strengthened multilateral agreements.
8. Reduce and mitigate the impacts of discarded and lost fishing gear, a major cause of entanglement and deaths of marine mammals.
For more details on each of these proposals, go to the President Plastics Action Plan website.

IMMP has joined in presenting this list to the President’s Transition Team, and we will continue to advocate methods to eliminate plastic pollution to the Biden Administration and the US Congress.

What You Can Do:

Sign the petition encouraging the Biden Administration to implement the Presidential Plastics Action Plan.

Your donations to support our work are more important than ever! IMMP needs funds to continue our massive lawsuit against ten major corporations to clean up the plastic pollution they are manufacturing. We continue to take action to end the entanglement and deaths of thousands of dolphins and whales around the world in plastic fishing nets and lines. Your support is critical! Thank you for your contributions to safeguard whales and dolphins.
