PROMPTS:

You can use any of these facts about orcas to inspire your art piece or find other info about orcas as a prompt for your creation.

•Orcas, also known as ‘killer whales’, are the apex predator of the sea, employing massive teeth that measure up to four inches long. They use exceptional intelligence, physical prowess, strategic planning, and cooperation to hunt and corral their prey.

•Orcas top the food chain and have diverse carnivorous diets. They feed on fish, seals, dolphins, whales, sharks, rays, and even seabirds. Some pods specialize in eating one type of animal, such as seal-hunting pods in the Arctic, and Southern Resident orcas in the Pacific Northwest who rely on eating mostly chinook salmon. Orcas share food among the pod.

•Orcas are highly social, live in pods of a few to several dozen individuals, and have close-knit families. Most orcas remain with their mothers for life.

•Wild orcas travel up to 40 miles per day and can dive hundreds or thousands of feet underwater in search of food.

•The orca, found in all oceans of the world, is the largest of the dolphin family. Their behaviors include breaching (jumping clear of the water), spy hopping (sticking their heads above water to look around), tail-lobbing (crashing their tails down on the sea surface), cartwheeling, back-diving, belly-flopping, and more. These actions likely help orcas communicate with other members of the pod; they also may do them simply out of exuberance and joie de vivre.

Thanks for participating and encouraging your friends to submit. We hope you enjoy this #IMMPArtChallenge!
