A positive answer has now emerged for one of the Whale Jail orcas who has been released. On August 20th, Grigory Tsidulko and other Russian researchers studying bowhead whales around the Shantar Sea were able to photograph a pod of killer whales that included an orca with a satellite tag.

Norway has surpassed Japan and Iceland in its whale hunting quotas (which do not include dolphins), and now officially kills more whales than any country in the world. Iceland actually temporarily stopped whaling this summer due to a lack of market for whale meat and other factors, while Japan has cut back its whaling effort to focus on whaling only within their 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone.

Recently, the International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP) of Earth Island Institute joined several colleague organizations in opposing a proposed import of three captive bottlenose dolphins. We oppose the import proposal in part because it’s unclear where the dolphins will actually go, and because neither proposed place is suitable. The import is now pending a final decision by government authorities.
